Handy Andy grabs series win at Ballymena on Friday

GP2 racer Andy McLeister from Ballymoney added the Terraclean Series title to his growing list of successes after a keenly contested finale at Ballymena Raceway.

Freddie Fleck occupied pole position after all the qualifiers had been completed, but his hopes of victory were soon dashed in an incident amongst the leading pack. Fleck’s Vauxhall Astra was tipped into a spin under pressure from Karl Smyth who took over out front with McLeister and Matthew Curran in hot pursuit. There was very little to separate this trio until they came around to lap the back marking Fleck on lap 10. Leader Smyth found his route impeded as he plotted a path around the tailender and McLeister was right on hand to take full advantage and nip into the lead! McLeister, Irish Champion in 2015, displayed all his race craft to avoid the problems and stroked his ANS Precision Engineering backed Vauxhall Astra home for a good win after a composed drive.

In the other classes Jonny Downs from Aghadowey enjoyed a flag to flag win in one of the Stock Rod events, with Niall McFerran from Rasharkin accounting for the other Stock Rod heat. Tim Hazlett took the final honours with Samuel Murphy from Aghadowey producing a strong run to second while McFerran showed up in third.

Main event on the programme was the Norman Cromie Memorial Trophy for the F2 Stock Cars which was won by Dean McCrory. Trevor McFaul from Garvagh carded a faultless hat-trick of wins in the Super Saloon class and Junior Rod Irish Champion Antony Kincaid extended his lead at the top of the Gold Roof Series with a final win in Round 2.
