Irish title for Laura

FIRST it was Paula, then it was sister Laura Grant's turn to win a golf championship.

After Paula's success in the Ulster Ladies, Laura triumphed in the Irish Girls Championships at The Grange Golf Club in Dublin. The talented Lisburn golfers qualified easily for the matchplay stages, finishing in the top five after two rounds of stroke play.

Both girls won their opening first round matches but Paula lost to the holder, Emma O'Driscoll (Ballybunion) on the final green in the second round, while Laura beat Irish girls' international, Sarah Helly (Enniscrone) by 5 and 4. In the quarter final she overcame Kelsey Coey (Clandeboye) on the 16th green. The semi final proved to be Laura's tightest match. After losing the first three holes to Sinead Sexton (Lahinch) she played brilliantly to go one up after 17. She lost the final hole but won the match with a par three at the 19th.

In the final against the leading qualifier, Amy Farrell (Moate), the match was all square after five holes. Laura was two ahead at the turn and putting superbly, played the next 11 holes in two under par to win the championship on the 16th green.

Laura and Paula were later selected for the Irish Girls team to play in the Home Internationals at Bangor, Co Down in August.
