Surprisingly good conditions last Friday helped deliver an exciting second round race in the ongoing local Primary Schools Cross Country league in St Columbs Park.
Lily Toorish, left, first place, and Aela Stewart, second place, both from Broadbridge Primary School, take a rest after the girl's race at the Flahavan's Primary School's Cross Country League held in St Columb's Park.Lily Toorish, left, first place, and Aela Stewart, second place, both from Broadbridge Primary School, take a rest after the girl's race at the Flahavan's Primary School's Cross Country League held in St Columb's Park.

Cian Thompson of St Patricks PS and Grace Norris of Broadbridge got the programme off to a great start winning the Mixed fun Run over the testing 1.2K course and set the scene for the Girls and Boys races which followed.

Broadbridge continued their domination of the Girls competition with four in the first five but this time Lily Toorish took top spot ahead of race one winner Alea Stewart, a single separating them at the line.

Steelstown’s Cara Laverty improved from 5th last time to claim third with Broadbridge pair Aisling Walsh and Anya Hockley next.

St Therese’s Leah Moore moved up from 8th at the Templemore race to round off the top six in a terrific race.

In the team race, six to score, Broadbridge, St Therese and Oakgrove finished in that order, same as in race one and look set to qualify for the NI finals in February.

With the members of the top three teams guaranteed a trip to Mallusk the battle for the other five individuals will be very interesting with only Cara Laverty, top six in both previous races looking good to go.

St Therese’s Stephen Quigley hung on to hold off a strong challenge from Mark McDaid from St Patricks, again just the one second in it at the line. Eoghan Coyle of Long Tower was a close up third, repeating his run at Templemore, where he finished behind St Annes pair Oisin Gallagher and Patrick McLaughlin, both missing at St Columbs Park.

Peter Boyle of St Patricks and Broadbridge’s Kyle McEleney improved significantly from race one and were fourth and fifth with Mark Toland of Long Tower completing the top six.

St Therese packed very well to take the team win ahead of St Patricks and Templemore winners Broadbridge. These three and fourth placed Oakgrove will battle it out for the three Mallusk qualifying spots when the final race is staged.
