Kids ‘Sprocket Rocket’ at BCC

Twenty volunteers from around Northern Ireland braved the mist and rain to attend the North’s first Sprocket Rocket Tutor Training Course delivered by Aisling Hubbard and Rachel Omrod at the University of Ulster at Jordanstown.

The Sprocket Rocket programme was originally developed by BMX Australia in an effort to improve kid’s bike handling skills and confidence when cycling.

The course, which is a mixture of theory and practical skills, will allow the participants to deliver the 12 week cycling skills course to young Volunteers Joan Trengove and Niall Carlin from our own Ballymoney Cycling Club along with others from Phoenix CC, Banbridge CC, XMTB/McConvey Cycles, Spires CC, Four Masters and Dromara CC listened to the presentations given by Aisling and Rachel before moving out into the car park to practise some of the activities in the programme.

Various members were allocated the role of instructor while those on bikes had a ball, weaving in and out of cones and practising stops, starts and mini sprints.

Everyone was in agreement that it was a terrific course and Joan and Niall are eager to put their new found knowledge into practice with young people in their area. It is hoped that more Sprocket Rocket Tutor training courses will be offer here very soon.

Aaron Swan is the Most Promising U14 Boy

TSC/BCC Racing’s Aaron Swan was voted the Most Promising U14 Boy at the 2011 Sports Awards last weekend.

To hand over the prize was guest of honour Dr Janet Gray MBE. Dr Gray who is a hero in her own right as she was the Disabled World Champion water skier. Janet at the age of 21 lost her eye sight and was plunged into a world of darkness.

This was until she discovered the world of water skiing and her life was dramatically transformed! By hard work, sheer determination and love of the sport Janet reached the pinnacle of disabled water skiing by winning the World Disabled Championship in the three disciplines.

(Slalom, tricks and jumps) and became the overall World Champion and World Record holder in all three disciplines.

She was World Champion in 1999, 2001 and 2003.

Aaron who has just recently been selected for the 2020 Development Squad who are lining up their ambitions for the summer Olympic games.

Double Irish Champion Aaron has again shown like Dr Gray that with guts and determination anything is possible.

With clubs in France looking at the young lad from Clough and a top professional cyclist committed to coaching him to further success the future is indeed looking bright for this likeable young man.

Aaron who is one of a number of talents emerging from the progressive Ballymoney Cycling Club (BCC Racing Team),and their high performance equipment and coaching that he will have access to will no doubt help him on his way to the top of his chosen sport.

This Tuesday night 1 November 2011 the club will hold their AGM at the Joey Dunlop Centre starting at 7.30pm sharp.
