Killicomaine pupils on trophy trail

Silverware arrived overall in football, hockey, rugby and netball during a season to remember.

The year nine minor netball players managed to complete the campaign without tasting defeat over a 21-game programme.

A clean sweep wrapped up the VISTA League title plus Banbridge Academy’s Blitz.

The treble touch for Killicomaine’s netball invincibles arrived with the Schools’ VISTA Cup final and defeat of Lurgan Junior High School.

The school juniors came home as runners-up across both the league and cup but finished with the overall title at the Banbridge Academy Blitz.

An inaugural Northern Ireland year eight high schools’ trophy for the rugby squad was secured thanks to a 10-a-side triumph within the 16-team national competition.

The pool section featured wins over Dunclug, Magherafelt and Ashfield rivals before derby delight to see off Lurgan at the semi-final stage and a showpiece triumph against Dromore.

Ben Lewis, Jake Taylor, Harry White, Jamie Hayes, Daniel Hunter, Jack Coulter, Daniel Harrison, Jamie Donaldson and captain James Campbell proved key.

The school’s under 14s marched across the rugby schedule with just a single defeat on the 15-match fixture list.

A fitting finale to the season was the House competition won by Blacker with Jordan Robb as captain.

The hockey season resulted in double delight for the eight year girls.

The 11th annual Killicomaine-hosted tournament attracted 12 schools and a 2-0 final victory provided the hosts with home joy.

The squad also finished as joint winners - alongside Methody - of the Grosvenor Grammar tournament and established Killicomaine as the only holders on multiple occasions.

The year eight boys came home as runners-up across the eight-a-side Banbridge Academy-based competition.

A single-goal defeat in the showpiece final with Banbridge Academy proved the decisive disappointment but key results arrived with wins including 6-0 and 4-0.

The under 12s’ boys’ football players were crowned Mid-Ulster Cup champions thanks to a 4-1 victory over Lismore courtesy of Curtis Murphy’s free-kick double and slick strikes by Daniel Greer and captain James Campbell.

The path to the main fixture included wins over Lurgan and Newry - with the squad also home as league runners-up and with a Northern Ireland Cup run that ended at the quarter-finals.
