Matthew continues great start to season with U13 Mixed Doubles Title

Seeded No2 and partnering Sophia Noble, who was to triumph in the Girls Singles, Matthew was never really troubled in the opening matches, beating Niall Mccabe and Caoimhe Mckeown 21-3 21-11.

Brian Lawlor and Niamh Crowley were to get little respite either as Cheung and Miss Noble booked their semi-final spot with a convincing 21-7 21-1 win.

Their next opponents were Ronan Mcgowan and Grace Lawlor and the No2 seeds performed well within themselves to reach the final in straight sets and Christopher O’Donoghue, partnering Julia O’Reilly, were overpowered in the final 21-11 21-1.

There was also a sterling performance from two other youngsters from Ulster.

Jason Ferguson and Chloe Woods had earlier extended the top seeds to 21-8 21-17 before going out in the Round Two.

Stuart McCollam was seeded in the Boys Singles and made an encouraging start to his challenge for the title, beating Niall McCabe 21-7 21-12 to reach the quarter-final .

He narrowly lost the opening set 22-20 to Christopher O’Donoghue but took the match in to a decider snatching the second 21-19 only to see his opponent in turn edge ahead to snatch the match from Stuart’s grasp 21-19 in 47 minutes.

Matthew and Stuart were seeded No1 in the Boys Doubles and were due to meet David and Kevin Downey in the final but it was to be the No2 seeds who were to go on to lift the title after Paddy Nolan and Chistopher O’Donoghue broke the hearts of the young Ulster pair, booking their place in the semi-final with a 21-16 21-17 victory.

In the Girls Singles Chloe Woods came close to snatching a semi-final place, pressing the top seed Fiona Mcadams to 21-12 21-17.

In the Girls Doubles Neasa and Siofra Flynn had to pull out all the stops against Chloe and Paige Woods, who had fought their way back into the match after losing the opening set 21-15.

The Alpha pair won the second set 23-21 and narrowly lost the decider 21-13.
