Markethill’s Emma Alderdice has been celebrated as “an inspiration” ahead of her debut as Northern Ireland’s first female World Championships competitor.
Alderdice left for America this week as part of Team Ireland’s five-strong panel to take part across the International Weightlifting Federation showcase.
Her coach, Timmy Graham, was quick to put into context the scale of the achievement.
“Emma is the first female from Northern Ireland to ever qualify for the World Championships,” said Graham. “Her progress has been remarkable since taking up the sport in 2011 and the latest accolade came within the past fortnight as the best female at a Celtic Nations tournament.
“She will be taking part in the 58-kilo category and to have reached this level is an inspiration to everyone within Ireland’s weightlifting community.”
Alderdice is scheduled to step on to the World stage at 3.30 on Sunday morning (UK time), with a stream available over the IWF website.
