Emma Alderdice has become the first female to qualify for Ireland at the World Weightlifting Championships

The Markethill woman will head off to America in November for the World finals.

Alderdice’s past results have placed her as the first female in Ireland to reach the qualification total required to secure a spot at the Texas showcase.

She is Ireland’s leading female across the full range of weight divisions and recently won national gold in the 58-kilo bodyweight category.

Alderdice produced a 73-kilo snatch last weekend and 88-kilo clean and jerk to set a fresh personal best by four kilos on the way to gold at the Irish National Weightlifting Championships in Cork.
