Tom McFarland, the club captain, teamed up with John Cassidy to top the Carrickblacker standings during week two of Portadown’s Clubworld Travel New Year Tournament.
The return left McFarland and Cassidy top of section two with 31.5 points over 12 holes.
The round started with a birdie three before 17.5 points across the outward six. Another birdie arrived at the 10th towards the back-six run of 14 points.
In section B, the pairing of George Doherty and Mark Sinnamon came home as runners-up on 30 points. Robert Beattie and Paul McAdam finished with two ‘twos’ on the way to third on 29.5.
In section A, Derek McCoy and Melvin Hull scored 30.5 points to lead the way.
Michael Connolly combined with Geoff Robinson for 28.5 points to finish second in section A. Gordon Willis and Keith Walker had to settle for third thanks to 28.
Michael Quinn and Robert Maguinness matched the 31-point score produced by Richard Quinn and Denis McDowell during the rescheduled opening week of Tandragee’s Ulster Carpet Mills-sponsored Johnston Shield.
The fourball, betterball format will feature six weeks of qualifying.
Four pairings returned 29 - Paul Topley/Johnny Quinn, Colin Hyndes/David Armstrong, William Small/David Cunningham and Kevin Maguire/Eugene Maguire.
Ten pairings came home on 28 - Neill Cooke/Norman McGladdery, Peter Crosby/Gerald Mullen, Paul McCullough/David Beattie, Geoff Gray/Harry McCracken, Gary McWhirter/Ivan Megaw, John Lindsay/Maurice Reynolds, Brian Agnew/Des Edgar, Alan Black/Alan Hewitt, Ashley McConville/Matthew Leckey and Douglas Hazard/Neil Hazard.
The race for the Johnston Shield weekly prize was won by Michael Quinn and Robert Maguinness on the countback over Richard Quinn and Denis McDowell thanks to 15 points across the final six holes compared to 14.
Kevin Maguire and Eugene Maguire were next in line thanks to the last-hole countback.
