Derby date results in century return as part of strong scoring sequence

Portadown finished out in front against Divis with a 79-72 success and six-point haul during the latest club schedule.

A strong final provided a 21-8 tally across the closing five ends to see off a respected Divis outfit.

Joe Corrigan, Robert Hobson, Kieran Trainor and Aidan Corrigan suffered points of five, five, one and five to turn the tables on Portadown’s 8-6 advantage.

Portadown failed to recover but held Divis across the final five ends.

On rink two, David Millsopp, Peter Hunniford, Maurice Whitla and Richard McMullan launched proceedings with three scores to sit 12-7 up by 10 ends.

It was 14-11 at end 15 but Portadown produced a run of 8-0 late on to finish in front by 22-11.

Chris Duff, Paul Whittle, Dane Jordan and Mark Sproule were level at four apiece before counts of five, two, one and four pushed the town side clear by 16-5.

Both rinks posted an additional 10 shots each to finish on 26-15 in the favour of Portadown.

Ken Lamond, Paul Moffett, Derek Wright and Sean Trainor were down by 15-9 at 12 ends.

Shots proved difficult to secure but Portadown came out on top over eight with a return of 11-1 for the 20-16 success.

Four of those shots arrived on the final two ends.

Portadown seniors moved past the century mark in the derby date against Lurgan, with a seven-shot clean sweep the outcome of the 102-57 victory.

Chris Duff, Billy Martin, Paul Whittle and Dane Jordan posted five early shots before a Lurgan comeback left the sides on 12 apiece.

The final push provided Portadown with a string of shots as 10 left the town men to 22-12.

David Millsopp, Peter Hunniford, Mark Sproule and Richard McMullan won seven of the opening 11 ends to lead by 18-8. Four additional scores over the next five ends left Portadown on 22-9 - with the lead offering a key cushion against Lurgan’s late push in the 24-17 town victory.

Joe Corrigan, Robert Hobson, Kieran Trainor and Aidan Corrigan registered 15 winning ends - with counts of four on three occasions and a five.

It was 4-4 at four ends before Portadown won the next three ends towards a 20-9 advantage by 16 ends.

A return of 14 without reply put Portadown on a final score of 34-9.

Ken Lamond, Paul Moffett, Maurice Whitla and Sean Trainor jumped into a lead of 8-3 before Lurgan responded with five scores to lead at halfway.

Portadown had two successive counts of five and a single to move from 18-11 down to 22-19 up.

A run of 36 points from seven fixtures has put Portadown second in the standings behind Whitehead.

Portadown B recently record two wins from three appearances - with the five-shot reverse against Ulster Maple Leaf the downside.

Promoted into Division Four, Portadown sit eighth on 20 points having recorded a win over the current leaders Annalong.

In the NIBA Junior Cup, Portadown progressed past Curran by 88-51.

Tomorrow (Saturday) Portadown A met Balmoral and the B players visit Queen’s Island.

Joshua Hyde and David Millsopp from Portadown have been selected to attend trials for the under 25s’ NIBA Inter-Association panel.
