Portadown 5 Newry 2
Portadown moved up one place to fourth in the table after a convincing win over Newry at Edenvilla on Saturday.
The home side started the brightest and took an early lead when Adam Stevenson converted a short corner low into the left corner early into the first half.
The lead didn’t last long however with Newry drawing level five minutes later through a short corner of their own.
Portadown kept up the pressure and were duly rewarded with a short corner on the verge of half time. Grabbing his second of the match, Adam Stevenson fired the Ports in front with a superb reverse strike past, leaving the keeper with no chance.
Portadown started the second half on the front foot and soon found themselves 3-1 up. Robbie Scott continued to display the fine form he has shown since joining the club, picking the ball up on the right flank and threading a superb through ball to forward Mackenzie Bennett.
The young striker showed great composure to work some space for himself in the circle before slotting the ball in the back of the net.
The home side continued to dictate the play and Stephen Johnston added to the score line, sweeping the ball home after another well worked short corner.
Newry clawed a goal back with ten minutes to go but a sweeping move started from the back line by Jonny Brown was finished off in style by Matthew Winter to make it 5-2 and put the result beyond doubt.
This weekend sees Portadown on the road as they face a tough away tie against Kilkeel. Coach Mark Evans knows his side will need to display the same sort of effort and commitment if they are to return home with the points.
