Kernan Run Club members this month managed to mark a milestone moment by reaching 100 on the roster.
A membership tally of 100 remains cause for celebration as a reflection of the club’s rise since securing full A.C. status in November 2014.
Founder member Gareth Irvine described the Kernan outfit as “a recreational club for the whole community and runners of all abilities”.
That open-door policy remains part of the attraction, alongside a 10-strong team of coaching staff with experience in the Athletics NI-backed Leader In Running Fitness course.
Seven prospective additions to the coaching panel are also in line to attend courses.
Irvine, a personal trainer and sports therapist, can recall the early days of Kernan Run Club when the focus was more on a fitness boot camp for a small band of enthusiasts.
“I felt there was a need in the community for something more regular,” said Irvine. “What grew from that is now a thriving club providing the Portadown, Lurgan and Craigavon areas with a running club for all.
“The club draws membership from people who have already some running experience but also our beginners’ programme is proving popular.
“People can use that to learn to run in preparation for membership.
“Sponsorship support from Thompson Travel in 2014 and 2015 was extremely helpful, taking us up to our current sponsors, House of Sport, McKeagney’s Chemists and Globeweigh, all local businesses keen to see the club grow from strength-to-strength.
“We thank not only our sponsors but anyone who has helped the club develop in any way.
“We recently held our very own race in the town, attracting hundreds of runners from all over Northern Ireland.
“It started and finished in the People’s Park and made its way around the town in five-kilometre or 10-kilometre routes.
“With the help of our sponsors and town officials, we hope to hold the event on an annual basis as it was considered a real positive, with the PSNI pleased and able to help make it such a success.”
