Portadown’s Norman Lau represented Ireland on three fronts in Poland at the European Junior Championships.
The teenager, a member of the Lisburn-based Alpha club, was selected for team tests against Norway and Spain.
Lau lined out against Norway’s Peter Roen Stensaeth and then Luis Enrique Penalver of Spain as Ireland finished second overall.
His individual challenge ended in set defeats of 21-8 and 21-7 against Vladimir Shishkov, with Lau’s highlight an early 4-2 advantage.
The mixed doubles put Lau alongside Moya Ryan and the pairing proved too strong for Dzmitry Kuzmitskaya and Maryana Viarbitskaya by back-to-back wins of 21-15.
The second-round clash ended in defeats of 21-6 and 21-12 against Frederik SaGaard Mortensen and Sara Lundgaard.
“Norman sat out Ireland’s two opening wins against Cyprus and Romania,” said a spokesman for Ireland. “He came into the side for the team victory over Norway by 3-2.
“Norman found it difficult to get into the opening set against Stensaeth, a player ranked 86, then posted his first points in the second facing a 6-0 deficit.
“Ireland and Norman then met seeded Spain and the enormity of the task facing the locals was shown in the final analysis as none went to three sets in a 5-0 defeat overall.”
