Seventeen-year-old Zach McClelland’s summer plans will include a trip to Spain following selection for Ireland.
The Portadown Men’s Hockey Club player this week had his spot in the international panel for the European Championships confirmed following months of Dublin training camps.
McClelland will travel to Santander as part of Ireland’s 18-strong squad for the week-long challenge.
“It should be a brilliant experience and great chance to develop,” said McClelland. “To make the final 18 came as a wonderful surprise.
“Our European Championship schedule includes games against Holland and Germany, with the plan to visit Spain in advance of the tournament to help acclimatise.”
McClelland’s development has included Ulster appearances in the Inter-Provincial Championships, selection for the UK Schools’ Games and position as Portadown College captain during the All-Ireland finals.
