Portadown’s Conor Murphy lined out alongside many of the sport’s top competitors last weekend in Abu Dhabi for the opening World Triathlon Series meeting.
The professional - who has his sights set on qualification for next year’s Olympic Games in Brazil - finished 30th and is currently based in Australia for two months of training and competition.
“I had a solid winter training programme, with a month in Kenya and two in America at intensive camps,” said Murphy. “However, my coach and I got the training load wrong leading up to Abu Dhabi and I ended up ill and fatigued coming into last weekend.
“To finish 30th was a strong start to the season given I did not have a good build-up and the race featured 19 of the top 20 guys in the world.
“I will be based in the Gold Coast area of Australia for the next eight weeks ahead of races in New Zealand, Australia, China and Japan.
“I am back home for a week towards the end of May.”
