Portadown men’s firsts wrapped up the year with a convincing weekend win against North Down by 2-0.
Adam Stevenson broke the deadlock off a penalty stroke before Robbie Scott closed the scoring at Edenvilla Park.
Scott’s strike arrived following a fine break from defence by Geoff Edgar on the experienced centre-back’s return from injury.
Edgar picked out Zach McClelland and pushed on to recieve the return pass before releasing Scott.
The opening goal was scored thanks to similar build-up play involving Gareth Titler and Scott ahead of Johnny Brown’s drive in the circle which led to a penalty stroke.
North Down held the upper hand ahead of the first goal, aside from McClelland’s slick delivery from the left deflected goalwards on the run by Gregory Croft when the visitors’ goalkeeper alert.
Brown steered a shot wide of the upright but Portadown suffered setbacks with green cards for Croft and Brown across the second half.
Jamie Knipe worked hard to produce saves during a North Down spell of pressure but the game’s decisive moment arrived thanks to Scott’s slick finish.
Portadown came close to a third goal when Titler picked out Stephen Johnston in the circle but the forward was unable to steer a shot on target.
Play will return in the New Year.
