Portadown men’s firsts strengthened a grip on second in the Senior One standings with Saturday’s 3-2 defeat of third-placed Bangor.
The Edenvilla Park seniors enjoy a six-point gap over Bangor off the back of that success, having played two games fewer than last weekend’s in-form rivals.
Bangor attacked from the start but Jamie Knipe proved alert between the posts before a short-corner routine led to the opening goal.
With Stephen Johnston - the side’s leading scorer - ruled out due to injury, Portadown had to turn to alternative sources in search of a second-half fightback.
Three goals left Portadown with full points at the final whistle.
Zach McClelland popped up to convert a Gareth Titler cross before the former linked up with Gregory Croft and Stewart Kirkland to test Bangor.
Captain Johnny Brown stepped out from the back to bolster the attacking strength and made his mark for Portadown’s second.
Jamie Curran closed out the Portadown scoring but a second Bangor goal led to late pressure before another victory towards the promotion push.
