St Mark’s Lisa Douglas and Jal Richardson proved the pick of the pairs at the Short Mat Players’ Tour World Masters in England.

Victory against England’s Ollie Hipkiss and Ryan Knight secured the final success required to return home as international champions.

The St Mark’s players had suffered defeat to England across the fours final alongside Gary Culbert and Martin Trainor but bounced back to seal silverware.

“We got off to a slow start on Sunday morning,” said Richardson, who also operates as the Armagh Zone convenor. “I struggled in the opening two group games and, to be honest, we were fortunate to get out of our group in second position as we lost our second game.

“It probably gave us the wake-up call we needed and after that defeat we stepped things up a gear and played some of the best bowls we have ever played.”

The St Mark’s players proved too strong for rivals from Wales across back-to-back tests before a quarter-final triumph against a combined pair.

A semi-final challenge included England international Ben Render but Douglas and Richardson edged home.

Culbert and Trainor, also from within the Armagh Zone, progressed into the knockout stages as group leaders but finished down at the quarter-final stages.

It marks a second pairs triumph for Richardson within the SMPT World Pairs Masters following his 2013 victory alongside Mid-Antrim’s William Morrison.
