Colin Turkington - a two-time British Touring Car Championship winner - has tonight (Tuesday) announced his move to Team BMR for 2015.
The departure of major sponsor eBay Motors from West Surrey Racing left Turkington’s future with the team in question, despite last season’s title-winning partnership.
He ended speculation this week by confirming a deal with Team BMR to race alongside Jason Plato and Aron Smith.
The arrival of Kevin Berry - Turkington’s engineer at West Surrey Racing - helped the Portadown-born driver complete the move.
He will race a Volkswagen Passat CC and testing is expected to start on Thursday.
“I’m back to defend my title, that’s what I am here to do,” said Turkington. “I am not entering the season thinking that if I finish in the top three I’ve done well.
“I’m here to win.
“For sure I am stepping outside my comfort zone. I’ve been with WSR for all but one of my seasons in the British Touring Car Championship and had my two championship successes with them.
“But aside from that I just felt I was ready for a new chapter, a new challenge and the extra motivation that comes with that.
“I absolutely loved it at WSR but it just felt the time had come to bring that period to an end.
“At the same time things conspired to make it impossible for me to continue anyway after they lost their title sponsorship from eBay Motors.
“Also my engineer over the last couple of years, Kevin Berry, moved across to Team BMR at the end of last season.
“So I guess that gave me extra confidence to make the switch and to believe I can do well.
“I am glad to say I have retained the support of Tourism Ireland, Lafarge Tarmac, Fane Valley food and the Todds Leap activity centre, for which I am very grateful.”
