Laurelvale’s bid to build links with a future generation of club cricketers led to 60 schoolchildren spending a recent afternoon at the village ground.

Edenderry, Portadown Integrated, Seagoe, Bocombra, Mullavilly and Hardy Memorial primary school students took part in the Kwik Cricket tournament.

The organised event was staged in response to coaching tutorials by Laurelvale members at schools.

Edenderry came out on top against Seagoe in the final to progress towards the Northern Ireland finals.

The Laurelvale panel included Colin Stewart (ECB level two coach), Simon Hughes (ECB level one coach), Dean McAlinden (ECB level one coach), David Sinton (club captain), Nicola Roberts, Joanne Harrison and Jeff Haire.

“This was a new venture for the club and is a key part in the strategy to introduce young people to the game and increase participation amongst girls and boys in the area,” said Laurelvale’s Wesley Best. “Coaching sessions were offered to schools and the response was such that a second tournament has been organised.”

“At the end of the coaching sessions, almost 300 children will have been introduced to the game.

“Each school was allocated a coach for the day and we were impressed by the talent and enthusiasm on show.

“There is a large pool of talent and we are keen to see players lining out for the club’s youth sides.

“Children, coaching staff, teachers and spectators all seemed to enjoy the day and it is planned to make the tournament an annual event.”

“We have club teams entered into league play covering the age range from primary school up to year 12.

“We are also developing a girls’ team and ladies’ squad.”

Youth coaching sessions take place at Laurelvale each Wednesday from 6.30 to 8.30.

Today’s (Friday’s) event at Laurelvale will run from 12.30 to 3 o’clock and include sides representing Orchard County, Richmount, Mullavilly, Edenderry and Moyallon.
