Competitors from nine nations joined Team Ireland to tackle the 13th FIPSed World Championships Predator Bank Fishing with Lures event. Russia collected the group honour, with Peter Hornak from Slovakia the individual champion.
“We have a lot to learn but, from that viewpoint, it was a great experience for the Team Ireland anglers,” said Richhill’s Andrew Powell, one of three from the area connected to Team Ireland alongside Portadown’s Colin Rutherford and Lindsay McFadden from Loughgall. “We have received an invitation to visit Slovakia off the back of last weekend and certainly picked up plenty of tips from simply watching the other nations.
“Plus, the feedback from the visiting teams was positive overall.”
Slovakia claimed silver in the team section, followed by Italy. Italy’s Massimilliano Ghibaudo was the individual runner-up behind Hornak but ahead of Slovakia’s Lukas Holly.
Other nations represented were Portugal, Croatia, Latvia, the Czech Republic, France and Romania.

“Last weekend’s event was fantastic and, thankfully, both competition days saw the sun, which showed off our wonderful lakes in all their glory,” said the Lord Mayor of Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council, Councillor Daryn Causby. “It is not often that we have a World Championships on our doorstep and it was truly a remarkable experience that I won’t forget.
“The fishing was simply outstanding and I know that the visiting nations were extremely impressed at the facilities on offer as well as of the entire area.
“We were very proud to show all that Craigavon has to offer and have no doubt they will remember their trip with fondness.
“Congratulations to all who took part and, of course, to the winners!”
The opening ceremony at Craigavon Civic and Conference Centre featured a red carpet, Lambeg drums, Irish dancing and bagpipes. The Seagoe Hotel played host for the closing ceremony.
