TIR NA NOG failed to finish with any reward for a determined display on Friday against All-Ireland Club champions, Crossmaglen, in the Senior League clash.
The Portadown players battled to remain in contention but eventually lost out by 2-12 to 1-6.
Early scores provided Crossmaglen with a crucial cushion and Tir na nOg’s first point arrived on 12 minutes from Kieran McCann.
A goal and four points by Crossmaglen left Tir na nOg on the backfoot but a long-range free by Paul Carvill offered some consolation - along with impressive performances by Gary Hearn and Andrew Neeson.
Chris McDonald’s goal late in the half from Ciaran Tiffney’s pass - plus a David Turley point - ensured a strong finish to the first period for Tir na nOg.
Crossmaglen gained control after the break with scoring spells either side of points from Kieran McCann and David Turley.
In the B Championship, Tir na nOg proved too strong for St Peter’s thanks to a battling team performance - with Gary Judge earning the ‘man-of-the-match’ honours.
