Larne library ‘lagged behind’

There was a new addition to Larne Free Library in the spring of 1961.

A children’s section was opened by Councillor M Bawn, a member of the library committee.

Mrs. Bawn said: “Libraries today are making a feature of the children’s section. Larne is lagging behind in developing this aspect.”

She went on to say she felt that the industrial expansion of the town would increase demand for children’s books.

She indicated that the junior section would stock fiction and non-fiction aimed at the five to 15 years age group.

Mrs. Bawn stated that if a five-year-old could not yet read, he or she could be read to by a parent, which she believed, would “encourage a love of books and reading an an early age”.
