Looking back... Laundry offer for elderly Rathcoole residents

A “good Samaritan” in Rathcoole decided to help elderly residents in the estate with their laundry in July 1964.

When Mary Chestnutt took delivery of a new automatic washing machine, she made a generous offer to Rathcoole Pensioners’ Club.

Mary approached the club secretary saying that she was prepared to take in the laundry of one pensioner who had difficulty doing the household task.

Mr Blair, secretary of the 100-member club, said that it was a “grand idea” and he immediately drew up a list of names.

Every Monday, Mrs Chestnutt’s husband was dispatched to collect the laundry and he returned it that evening washed, dried and ironed.

Mrs Chestnutt said she hoped the idea would “catch on”.
