Looking back... Troops take part in Moonlight Saunter

The Sixth Battalion RUR was taking part in “Operation Moonlight Saunter” in December 1963.

Troops included men from Ballyclare and Larne.

They were joined by a support platoon from Lisburn for the exercise in the Antrim Hills.

The exercise included an “assault on cliffs”, a “strike” on land followed by a simulated attack on a “nuclear power station” at Robin’s Hill.

Reveille was at 4.30am. A helicopter was unable to take off due to the wintry weather conditions.

It would have been the first time in Northern Ireland in which a helicopter would have been used by a TA unit on company exercise.

The operation was under the command of Captain DM Fulford-Talbot.
