Ophir Rugby Club gears up for annual Sevens tournament
Starting on Friday evening (August 15) an Under-16s tournament will take place from 6.30pm. On Saturday morning (August 16) it’s the U18s competition (9.30am kick-off), with the main event staged over the course of the afternoon (1pm start).
The Sevens has been held every year since 1974 is heralded by organisers as the traditional start of the rugby season.

Hide AdThis year there are three competitions being held over the course of the weekend culminating in the main event with 12 teams competing for the title and the chance to get their hands on the coveted Will Totten Memorial trophy.
Launching the event, Newtownabbey’s mayor, Thomas Hogg, commented: “This promises to be a great weekend of rugby for all to enjoy, with a range of activities to add to the atmosphere. I’d like to wish all the players good luck and hope to see a good turnout of spectators to cheer the teams on.”
Teams from all over the Province will be in attendance, including defending champions Queen’s, Ballyclare RFC, Randalstown RFC, Academy RFC, Carrick RFC and others.
The event is supported by Newtownabbey Borough Council. Young and old are welcome to come along to spectate free of charge and enjoy the festivities.

Hide AdAs well as a great weekend of rugby, on Saturday there will be a barbecue and children’s entertainment with a bouncy castle and face painting.
