Paraguay's World Cup Edgars

TWO of Paraguay's World Cup squad played in a memorable Elite Milk Cup final at Coleraine in 2003.

Edgar Barreto and Edgar Benitez were with Paraguay when they defeated Brazil in arguably the best ever Elite decider in the history of the tournament.

Barreto captained the side in a 3-2 victory and the midfielder played at his second World Cup finals, having also been involved in Germany four years ago.

Paraguary have won the Elite title three times in 2002, 2003 and 2006, defeating Denmark, Brazil and the USA. Their U-17s also triumphed in 2001 when they beat Manchester United 6-0.

Edgar is the younger brother of third-choice keeper Diego Barreto and actually preferred playing in goal until his teenage years.

He helped Paraguay win Olympic silver in 2004 along with his sibling. At the 2006 World Cup he played the final nine minutes against Sweden and started against Trinidad and Tobago.

Barreto has been playing in Europe since 2003, when he left Cerro Porteo to join Dutch side NEC Nijmegen. In 2007 he moved on to Reggina, where he was again a regular starter. Barreto joined Atalanta last summer but his injury problems meant he could contribute little to the club’s unsuccessful relegation battle.

Edgar Benitez is a pacy, left-footed striker, often used as an impact substitute. All eight of his qualifying appearances came from the bench. Nicknamed ‘The Bird’, he plays a similar role for Mexican side Pachuca - under half (13 of 28) of his league appearances this season were starts.

He scored an important goal in qualifying, netting an injury-time equaliser in the 1-1 draw in Ecuador.

Benitez started his professional career at Libertad but found more success when he moved on to Sol de America. He moved to Pachuca for the 2008/09 season, but has not won a regular starting spot.
