Taster sailing day in Portrush a huge success

A taster sailing day has proved to be a huge success in Portrush, after Coleraine Yacht Club (CYC) and Portrush Yacht Club (PYC) joined forces, with support from RYA NI's Active Clubs Co-Ordinator.

Storm Katie did not stop the taster day and the two-hour complimentary session allowed participants to take to the water, many for the first time, with an instructor on each boat.

Those who took part were given an introduction to dinghy sailing, with the option to enrol on CYC/PYC sailing courses over the summer.

RYA NI’s Active Clubs Co-Ordinator Lisa McCaffrey said: “Taster days are a fantastic opportunity for those who have never tried sailing before to give it a go. Many of our participants had never considered taking to the water before but are now eager to get signed up for a sailing course over the summer. Sailing is an exciting sport to try and with fantastic facilities such as these in Portrush on our doorstep, it makes it even more enjoyable!”

Some participants also had the chance to meet NI Solo offshore sailor Hammy Baker and got to witness first-hand his type of sailing.

While the storms meant participants couldn’t get out on the water during the afternoon session, they got to experience some speed on the RIB.

CYC/PYC will be running another Try Sailing Day on Saturday 21st May.  Book online at http://www.coleraineyachtclub.co.uk/
